From both planting dates and from both sites there was one clear winner - "Solent Wight". This soft neck type ............ stores well into the following year. It originated from central France but is grown in the UK. If you want a hard neck type, there was little to choose between "Lautrec Wight" and "Purple Moldovan".

Due to the sheer size of the Elephant Garlic clove, it is not possible to plant this variety by mechancial means, and therefore must be planted by hand.

The garlic bulb, exposed to sufficient heat, will dry and go into deep senescence, prior to reawaking in late autumn or spring with thoughts of propagating itself and pushing out a green shoot. By drying the bulb thoroughly and causing the minimum of shock to it by leaving the stem entire in a plait, we delay the onset of regrowth as long as possible.
